Soil Preparation for Tomato Gardening

Soil for tomatoes in the organic gardenAs is with growing any other type of plant today, proper soil preparation is essential if you are to provide your tomatoes with the best and most conducive environment for growth and development. The soil needs to have the right PH level (between 6.5 -7.0), it must have enough nutrients so that tomatoes can thrive on well, and more importantly it should have a good soil composition that will be able to hold and retain water and nutrients long enough to allow maximum absorption of the same. It therefore goes without saying that if the soil you plan to use to grow your tomatoes doesn’t meet these qualities, you will need to make some adjustments.

It is advisable to cultivate or prepare the soil before the start of the planting season. This becomes all the more important if you know you will need to make up for the current soil condition. Basically, the only soil condition that doesn’t need preparation is the one that is very rich in organic matter, the one that has the right nutrients, the one that is able to retain and subsequently drain water, and more importantly, the one that has the right soil PH range.

One way of soil preparation for tomato gardening is tilling the soil; which is otherwise known as turning over the soil and digging deeper in an effort to mix the soil composition effectively. While the popularity of tilling the soil has reduced over the years, more so after the discovery that organisms such as earthworms can be very beneficial to the soil, there are still some soil types that warrant tilling. By tilling the soil before the planting season starts, you will be giving your soil some refreshment which will add in fresh organic matter and nutrients that will go a very long way in rejuvenating the soil, thus providing a great yield when the planting season comes to a close.

With that being said, you should also know that soil preparation entails adding essential nutrients to the soil to create the best possible environment for your tomato plants. One way to go about this is to add compost, which is very rich in nutrients that promote growth and at the same time introduce micro-organisms to the soil which are very beneficial in the growth and development of your tomatoes. By adding compost, you will also be improving soil consistency, thus facilitating the ability of the soil to retain and drain excess water.

When all is said and done, soil preparation for tomato gardening should be done 6 months prior to planting the tomatoes. This allows for enough time for the soil PH level to be adjusted to the optimal range. It also allows the compost and other essential nutrients to be added and infiltrated in the soil thus creating an optimal environment for growth and development of your tomato plants.
