insects-organic-gardenToday, more and more people around the world are enjoying the health benefits that a vegetable and herbs garden provides. When you have a home garden, you will not only be saving some money on groceries it will mean you will eat healthy food choices; not to mention the health benefit of working out while doing the actual gardening.

Vegetables and herbs grown at an organic home garden are more nutritious than those bought at the grocery store. This is because they would be grown without the use of harmful pesticides, insecticides, and other harmful chemicals.

Not only is using chemical based pesticides harmful to the environment, it can be a health risk especially if the produce is not cleaned thoroughly before it is eaten. It is because of this that many people look for alternative ways of controlling pests without the use of harmful pesticides.

Despite the fact that herbs are known to be the most resilient and pest resistant plants that can be grown, you will still need to take some measures to ensure the pests and other insects are kept at bay. This becomes all the more important if you have your organic herbs and vegetable garden outside. One thing you can do would be to put a fence in place around the garden so as to keep off small creatures.

You might also want to think of having ultrasonic devices in place. These devices are known to deter pests and keep them away by emitting sound frequencies that can only be heard by the insects and pests. Be advised though that the efficacy of these devices is still unfounded as there are people who claim they are highly effective while others claim they are ineffective.

Chemical free pesticides and insecticides can also be used, especially when dealing with indoor plants. The best thing about chemical free pesticides is that they can be used until the last day of harvest without having to worry of their harmful effects to the environment. Organic insecticides are available which on being sprayed on the plants will not harm the environment or the produce.

Companion planting is also a common and very effective natural way of controlling pests and insects in herb and vegetable gardens. There are very many herbs that are detestable to insects and many others that are attractive. Basil and marigolds for example are known to emit a not-so-good fragrance for the insects, hence repelling them away. So by planting your herbs and mixing them with basil or marigold, you can be sure to keep these irritants at bay.

Regardless of the method you use to keep your organic vegetable and herb garden pest-free, one thing that is always guaranteed is the fact that you will be able to enjoy fresh produce with no chemicals; meaning you will produce high quality produce than that found in your local grocery store.
